The missing link to the great-grandfather

Unresolved

Lidia’s maiden surname is Bugoenko (A-0021). This refines the research lead, but the shared surname and patronymic Alexandrovna do not by themselves establish that Alexander Nikolaevich Bugoenko was her father. The specific intermediate relationship remains unresolved.

Service in the Imperial Russian Army

Family source

Alexander Nikolaevich's service in the Imperial Russian Army is reported by the family. His unit, rank, service years and service record remain unknown. The GWAR search outcome does not disprove the family account.

Possible surname change to Brusentsov

Hypothesis

The initial family account described a surname change after the new authorities came to power in 1917, associated with Imperial Army service. The proposed new surname Brusentsov was then qualified as 'I think (not confirmed)'. The change itself, exact date, reason and new surname are not documented. Brusentsov is not assigned to the great-grandfather as an established surname.

Dates and places in earlier generations

Unresolved

Birth and death dates for Alexander, Lidia and Bugoenko are not established. Azov is known only as Sergey's birthplace in 1957 and is not attributed to his parents or great-grandfather. A missing death date does not mean a person is living.

Clarification of Lidia’s maiden surname

Statement by the family archive owner on 7 November 2026

Lidia Alexandrovna Brusentsova’s maiden surname is Bugoenko. This clarification comes from the same family informant, not an independent archival check. It does not establish Alexander Nikolaevich as her father.

Documents that would move the research forward

  1. Sergey's birth record in Azov

Start with the family birth certificate for 7 January 1957, or obtain the corresponding civil registration extract through the official process. Both parents’ full names are needed, especially Alexander’s patronymic. Lidia’s maiden surname is Bugoenko according to the family; a marriage certificate would help verify it against a document.

  2. Alexander and Lidia's marriage and birth records

Look for the marriage record of Alexander Brusentsov and Lidia Alexandrovna Bugoenko, then both birth records. Alexander’s patronymic is still unknown. Their son’s birthplace does not establish that they married in Azov. The documents should identify Alexander’s and Lidia’s parents and resolve the link to the great-grandfather.

  3. Verify Bugoenko and the surname change

Once dates, birthplace, wife or the intermediate relationship are known, compare records from before and after the proposed surname change, and search for a name-change record and military service records. Without distinguishing details, namesakes cannot be added to the tree.

  4. Earlier portraits and collateral branches

No separately identified portraits of Alexander, Lidia or Bugoenko were established in the reviewed materials. Sergey's siblings, and his parents' siblings and parents, are still unknown. Family albums, captions and civil records may provide the next verifiable lead.
